Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail

You don’t have to look very far to find an article or press release about the benefits of a Dry January. Over the past several years, people taking a break from drinking in the new year have continued to gain momentum. Whether you might observe a Dry January to compensate for the over-indulgence during the holiday season, or if you’d like to give a Damp January a try, we concocted a simple mocktail we love. We call it the Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail.

Over the past year, Alie has become interested in creating delicious non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy. During the workweek, Alie will mix a variety of cocktail ingredients in search of a delicious drink she can enjoy while making dinner. She hit a home run with this simple Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail.

Toasted!

What makes this mocktail stand apart from many of the others we’ve tried is the toasted orange slice. Toasting the orange caramelizes some of the sugars in the orange and gives the Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail a nice smokey flavor. For this recipe, you’ll need a good butane torch. If you don’t have one, we recommend this one. Our torch has worked reliably for years. The only thing we’ve needed to do is refill the butane. Don’t forget to purchase your fuel, which you can find here.

Although toasting your orange might seem intimidating at first, it is quite simple. Fire up your torch and apply the flame to the rind of your orange slice. You’ll want to apply the flame until you start to get a little char on the rind. The more you char it, the smokier the flavor becomes. We used a medium char in our Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail.

Ingredients

The Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail only needs a few basic ingredients. You’ll need ginger beer or ginger ale and an orange. Add ice to your glass, toast the orange, and squeeze it into your glass. Make sure to rub the orange peel around the rim of your glass for extra flavor. Fill the glass with ginger beer and drop your orange into the glass. Give it a stir and you are ready to enjoy!

Although we crafted the Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail as a non-alcoholic beverage, you can always create a spiked version. The flavor of the toasted orange and ginger is versatile. It pairs well with clear spirits such as gin or vodka and is incredible with whiskey if you want to make a mule variation. Whether you opt for the mocktail version or a spiked version, you are sure to enjoy our Toasted Orange Ginger Mocktail. Let us know what you think!
