Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Every time I pop into the liquor store, I am on the lookout for good deals. Through my exploring, I’ve found that those budget bottles of whiskey are often better than their price point indicates; they’re just not subjected to the hype of the higher-priced brands. When I noticed this bottle of Wolf Moon Bourbon Whiskey on sale for $18.99, I knew it would be making the trip home.

Wolf Moon Bourbon: Another Celebrity Bottle

I was excited to share the new bottles I picked up with Alie. Riding the high of my new purchases, I immediately dove into my research process to learn about the origins of Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon Whiskey (since I never heard of it before). Ironically, the story led me to Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line. I’m not a country music fan. At all. You could even call me a hater. Many of my friends do. I did at least recognized their names even if I couldn’t pick them out of a line-up.

According to Wolf Moon’s website, the whiskey idea was developed while Aldean was touring with Florida Georgia Line. The artists wanted a bourbon to toast their successful performances at the end of the night. The result is this traditional 80 proof bourbon that doesn’t shine in any particular area, but is very drinkable. It is also affordable, which is always a plus in our books.

Old Camp Whiskey

Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled by Old Camp Whiskey. Old Camp is better known for their Peach Pecan whiskey that was created by Florida Georgia Line to honor the staple of Georgia: peaches. Given Old Camp’s connection to Florida Georgia Line, it makes sense that Jason Aldean would use the same source and bottler to produce Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon. Old Camp Peach Pecan and Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon are likely sourced from MGP, a large distillery that produces spirits for a variety of private labels. MGP is based in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, just a few hours from where I was born. Perhaps this bottle was calling to me somehow…

The mash bill appears to be top secret. Usually, with a little research, I can find the mash bill for most whiskeys. However, I was unable to locate the exact breakdown of ingredients. The Wolf Moon website indicates it is two-thirds corn and one-third rye and barley aged for 4 years. Following after its creators, perhaps this whiskey takes its intellectual property notes from the music industry. No copyright infringement here.

Tasting Notes

I noticed the aroma of Wolf Moon is very sweet with a hint of vanilla. Sitting outside by the fire during our camp trip to southern Utah, I didn’t pick up as much of the aroma because it is quite light. I picked up more off the nose of the whiskey once we were back inside the camper.

The whiskey is very sweet. I picked up notes of caramel and pear. The finish is warm with hints of oak. Alie noted that because of the sweetness, it would make a great beginner whiskey. I felt that this would be a good whiskey to pregame a country music festival. That way, it might numb the pain of country music. Again, hater. Alie thought this would be a good whiskey to carry in a flask and enjoy on the first chair up on a bluebird day.

Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon Whiskey has good flavor at first contact on your palate, but loses some flavor in the middle of your sip. It isn’t harsh or overpowering. It finishes smooth with hints of charred oak. Wolf Moon is an easy-drinking whiskey you could sip all night. If the intention was to produce a whiskey you could sip for hours, Aldean and FGL hit the mark.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon is a decent, inexpensive bottle of whiskey. You won’t be blown away by the taste, but you won’t be disappointed given the low price point. It has adequate flavor, a touch of warmth, and it goes down smooth, which is good for a budget whiskey.

Wolf Moon appears to be widely distributed and should be easy to find. I attempted to verify its distribution range via the Wolf Moon website, but their maps were unresponsive. According to Reserve Bar, Wolf Moon is available in 32 states. If you can find it in your local liquor store, you will pay a lot less than you will online.

Wolf Moon Bourbon also makes a good cocktail mixer. I could see mixing it with soda or using it as a base in another spirit. For cocktail ideas, check out our recipes here.

Beginner whiskey enthusiasts would enjoy this whiskey. Wolf Moon Straight Bourbon is light, with sweet and approachable flavors. There is nothing so overpowering about the flavor that it would turn you off. If you happen to find yourself with a cup while sitting by the campfire, in a shot glass pregaming before a concert, or in a flask on a ski lift, you could certainly do much worse. Even if the whiskey isn’t memorable, the experience will be. If you are lucky, perhaps you could even get Jason Aldean or Florida Georgia Line to autograph your bottle.
