Last week, Alie talked me into leading a whiskey tasting for a few of our friends. Her idea was to introduce our friends to a few new pours and craft a custom cocktail to enjoy with each person’s whiskey of choice. I immediately set out planning this Blood Orange Crush.

My cocktail creation process begins, as it always does, with searching our fridge for ingredients. When planning meals towards the tail end of our grocery supply, Alie likes to play rounds of Food Network’s “Chopped” with whatever ingredients we have left in the fridge. I prefer to channel that same creativity into cocktail recipes. Once I have a list of possible ingredients I think about which might pair well together. Then it is time to start mixing and tasting.

For our newest creation, I discovered oranges in the crisper drawer which initially had me thinking whiskey sour meets tequila sunrise. When I cut a slice, I was pumped to find that the oranges were blood oranges. The reddish juice and added sweetness of blood oranges make them perfect for a whiskey crush.

The blood orange paired with ginger beer, rye whiskey, maple syrup, and mint created a perfect citrus crush. You’ll want to pair this with a rye whiskey because the rye spice compliments the ginger beer. High West Double Rye would be a good choice for this cocktail. Check out our High West review here. Blood Orange Crush

A blood orange whiskey cocktail with maple syrup.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Servings 1

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Whiskey
  • 1 tbsp Maple Syrup
  • 1/2 inch Piece of Blood Orange
  • 1 spring Mint
  • 1.5 ounces Ginger Beer

Instructions

  • Combine the blood orange, mint, and maple syrup in a shaker.
  • Crush the orange with a muddler or spoon to extract as much liquid as possible.
  • Add the whiskey and top the shaker with ice.
  • Shake for 10-15 seconds to combine the liquid.
  • Pour into a rocks glass over ice.
  • Add ginger beer to taste. 1.5 to 2 ounces of ginger beer is best. Too much ginger beer overwhelms the other flavors.
