Whiskeycello Sour in a rocks glass. Garnished with mint.
Whiskeycello Sour ready to drink!

Our cocktail bar kit has expanded quite a bit since we launched our website and Instagram earlier this year. We’ve added numerous bitters, syrups, and a few types of canned and bottled juices to help us create our cocktails. However, creating a cocktail after returning from our trip was a bit challenging because we hadn’t gone to the store and had a limited number of ingredients. Luckily for us, a bottle of limoncello saved the day to help us create our Whiskeycello Sour.

We had been gifted a couple of bottles of limoncello from a friend a while back. She brought them back as a gift from her trip to Italy. We often would pour some into a sherry glass to enjoy as a digestivo. While scouring the fridge looking for something I could use to make a new cocktail, I found the bottle of limoncello between our Balsamic and cooking wines at the lower level of the fridge door. It was just the ingredient I needed .

What is Limoncello?

Limoncello is an Italian Liqueur, mainly produced in Southern Italy. Limoncello is the second most popular drink in Italy. It trails only Campari in sales. It is made from lemon zest and simple syrup, so it is both sweet and sour, perfect for mixing with whiskey. For this recipe, we used our favorite daily drinker/mixer bourbon, Evan Williams.

For the Whiskeycello Sour, we combined Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond, limoncello, freshly squeezed lemon juice, mint leaves, and Peychaud’s bitters. The resulting cocktail was a sweet, sour, and refreshing. It was the perfect patio treat after a long day of hard work.

You won’t need a friend to import a bottle of limoncello from Italy for you. It can be found in most liqueur stores. If you are so inclined, you could also make homemade limoncello. It simply takes sugar, vodka, lemons, and some patience. If you want to make a homemade version, check out this recipe.

If you like lemons, you are going to love this Whiskeycello Sour. We preferred it without ice, but you can add ice as needed to keep the drink cool. You may have heard the old adage, “when life gives you lemons…” Forget lemonade, make limoncello.
